Beginning in 1989, on a regular weekly basis, a staff of volunteers has collected and distributed in excess of 2,000,000 pounds of food to over 40,000 families. This food has been distributed to families in targeted neighborhoods within San Francisco, Alameda and Marin counties, and since 2001, in Siskiyou County. A truck drives into the neighborhood and delivers food boxes to the residents on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, volunteers and neighborhood people help carry the food to shut-ins and the elderly.
Because this distribution happens on the
streets of the poor neighborhoods, the
program reaches those people on the very
bottom - those who have no resources, no
hope and little information about what is
available to them through other possible
existing programs.
Holiday Giveaways
In 1990, the Board of Directors voted to supplement the food giveaway program at the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays by including turkeys and hams in the food boxes. In 1990, FREE the NEED gave away 80 holiday boxes. All of the boxes for both holidays contained turkeys, flour, rice, beans, and assorted produce including potatoes, onions and yams.
In 1996, at its two holiday giveaways FREE the NEED gave away a total of almost 40 tons of food in 850 food boxes, including turkeys.
